Urban Mobility in a Digital Age

As the Transportation Technology Strategist for the City of Los Angeles, Ashley Z. Hand of Cityfi developed the transportation technology strategy, Urban Mobility in a Digital Age, which defines a scalable roadmap for integrating shared mobility, technology-enabled transportation experiences, and automated vehicles into department planning and operations to maximize the benefits to public safety, sustainability and roadway efficiency across the Los Angeles region.

Vision

Urban Mobility in a Digital Age was created to help Los Angeles redefine its future and set the precedent for 21st century mobility. It aims to help the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) evolve into a platform for innovation, deploy an technology-driven ecosystem and focus on delivering data-as-a-service, infrastructure-as-a-service and mobility-as-a-service to address the transportation needs of the future.

Method

Building on the existing innovative work of the department, the strategy defines public policy recommendations ranging from topics such as data sharing and land use; an action plan for next steps to transform the department into a 21st Century mobility manager; and outlines a series of pilot initiatives to demonstrate and test advanced technologies, from smart city sensors and smartphones, to bikeshare and automated vehicles.

Following the fellowship, the Cityfi team also supported partnership development, the creation of a data sharing policy and template agreement, developing the definition of a metric for measuring transportation happiness (user experience), and supporting overall implementation activities.
